Follow the miller rescue into the Court: Ambrus and Infamy
Find Mert, prepare the prison rescue, and read the difference between a boyar’s progress and the global edicts that follow Infamy.
If the open world leaves you unsure where to start, investigate the missing miller. It gives you a concrete person to help and a way into the northern Court progression. A boyar's progress and global Infamy are related, but they are not the same indicator.
Read the Court panel after each activity
Each of the three boyars has associated activities. Completing enough of a boyar's activities creates an opportunity to confront that ruler. Disrupting the established order also increases Infamy, and a new rank brings an edict from Brencis.
After a Court action, inspect whose progress changed, whether another objective appeared, and whether Infamy crossed a rank. That tells you more than simply watching a map marker disappear.
Start at Mert's Mill
Explore south from Laslea and look for Mert's Mill. Speak with his wife Rena to learn he was taken, entering The Firebrand thread. Follow the lead to the military camp.
A daytime approach may ask you to surrender your weapons. At night, vampire movement and abilities offer different options. Save before committing and read the entry conditions instead of automatically confirming dialogue.
Meeting Mert is not the end of the rescue
IGN describes bribing the jailkeeper or dealing with a soldier bullying him as routes toward the cells. Speaking with Mert advances the situation into Under Watchful Eyes, where the goal becomes getting him out.
The night approach uses Shadowstep around a tower, then searches near the overseer for the key. Prepare before opening the cell: the escort fight is more demanding than simply reaching the prisoner. Check healing and quickslots before starting it.
If the key objective is missing, confirm that the journal has reached the rescue stage. If Mert is out but the quest remains active, check the escort objective. Do not skip the initial conversation because a video already shows the later door.
Continue toward Ambrus when ready
The rescue contributes to the Ambrus thread. Further patrols and dropped letters can reveal leech shipments. Read the notes, then check the map. The leeches also provide vampire recovery supplies, but activity costs still follow the displayed hourglasses. IGN shows how these leads connect.
Pause sabotage when another objective matters more
| Current priority | Useful approach |
|---|---|
| City conversations and companion quests | Finish the immediate character objectives before a sabotage spree |
| Confronting one boyar | Select that ruler's activities and check progress |
| Gathering legendary equipment | Check whether the route needs or merely increases Infamy |
| Entering the finale | Finish the companion preparation you want and preserve a save |
Higher Infamy can make travel, prices, or access less comfortable; read the actual edict affecting your save. Keeping Infamy low forever is not the goal either. The Arbiter armour route connects to Court progression. Make the progression serve your current objective.
